Monument to José Antonio Álzate

José Antonio Álzate was born in Ozumba in 1737. He graduated from the Colegio de San Ildefonso in Mexico City. His interests in the natural sciences, physics, astronomy and mathematics took him to explore Mexico’s past. His account of Xochicalco is crucial to the archaeological studies of this site. He created the Gaceta de Literatura, a literature newspaper. In honor of his achievements, the town of Ozumba carries the name of its prodigial son. The municipal president placed a monument to remember him.
